Bank “rules” circulate as if they were laws. Some come from written offer terms; others are patterns inferred from applications. Treat those categories differently.
Chase 5/24
The widely reported 5/24 practice means many Chase applications may be denied when five or more personal cards have been opened across issuers during the previous 24 months. Chase does not publish a universal consumer rule page promising how every account will be counted. Use it as a conservative planning assumption, not guaranteed underwriting logic.
American Express card limits
Claims such as “five credit cards and ten charge cards” or fixed 90-day spacing are not stable public guarantees. Limits can depend on account type, customer profile, and current underwriting. The reliable rule is the exact welcome-offer eligibility language presented before submitting an application. American Express may also show whether you are ineligible for a welcome offer during the application process.
Citi bonus-family language
Citi’s product pages contain card-specific restrictions. For example, the Strata Elite page states that its bonus may be unavailable after a recent Strata Elite bonus or certain conversions within 48 months. Do not generalize one card’s language to every Citi family. Current Citi Strata Elite terms.
Issuer velocity and total exposure
Issuers may consider recent inquiries, recently opened accounts, current credit lines, utilization, income, payment history, and internal account performance. Even someone below a commonly reported limit can be denied.
A safer application checklist
- Read the exact welcome-offer restriction on the application page.
- Count recent personal and business accounts conservatively.
- Check all three reports for errors and frozen files.
- Avoid new cards before a mortgage or other major loan.
- Apply only when normal spending can meet a bonus without debt.
- Save a dated copy of the offer terms.
