A yearly card review helps separate benefits you genuinely use from benefits that only look valuable on paper. Start several weeks before an annual fee or major benefit renewal.
List costs and natural-use value
Record the annual fee, then count only statement credits and benefits that replace purchases you would otherwise make. Do not use face value when a credit is difficult to redeem or requires extra spending.
Check recurring benefits
- Look for monthly, quarterly and calendar-year deadlines.
- Confirm whether enrollment is required.
- Review spending caps and excluded transaction types.
- Download the current benefits guide from the issuer.
Prepare a decision
Compare ongoing value with the fee. If the card no longer fits, ask the issuer about retention, downgrade and product-change options before closing it. Protect rewards and move recurring charges first.
Use the Annual Fee Calculator, Benefits Calendar and Keep, Downgrade or Cancel planner for a structured review.
