Cash back is easier to value. Points can be more valuable, but only when you will use the right redemption method. The better card produces the strongest net value from purchases and travel you already planned.
Translate both options into dollars
For cash back, multiply eligible spending by the reward percentage. For points, multiply spending by points per dollar and your own cents-per-point value. Subtract annual fees from both totals.
Use a conservative point value
Do not use a premium-cabin redemption you are unlikely to book. Base your estimate on destinations, dates, transfer partners, taxes, award availability, and flexibility matching your plans.
Account for caps and portals
A headline rate may apply only to limited spending, one selected category, or issuer-portal bookings. Purchases outside those conditions can earn much less.
Choose based on your scenario
Cash back often wins when you want predictable value or rarely travel. Points can win when you know the program and can find suitable awards.
Model both choices in Planning Studio, check terms in the card database, and use the Points Value Calculator before treating a points rate as better than cash.
