Credit card merchant offers are targeted promotions attached to an eligible card account. They are separate from the card’s normal rewards rate and may provide cash back, extra points, or a statement credit after a qualifying purchase.
Merchant offers are not standard card rewards
Standard rewards usually apply automatically when a purchase meets the card’s published category rules. Merchant offers commonly require activation and have their own eligible cards, dates, minimum spending, channels, locations, and exclusions.
A safe workflow for using an offer
- Open the issuer’s official website or app yourself.
- Read the complete offer terms before activating.
- Confirm the exact eligible card.
- Check the expiration date, spending threshold, and whether the offer is online-only or in-store-only.
- Activate the offer before purchasing.
- Pay directly with the enrolled card unless the terms allow a digital wallet or third-party service.
- Keep the terms until the credit or points post.
Can offers be stacked?
Sometimes one purchase can earn the card’s normal rewards, a merchant offer, a shopping-portal reward, and a merchant coupon. Each program has separate terms. Gift cards, coupon codes, third-party checkouts, returns, split payments, or taxes and shipping can affect eligibility.
Why an offer may not trigger
- The wrong card was used.
- The offer was not activated before the charge.
- The transaction posted after the deadline.
- The merchant used a different legal entity or payment processor.
- The minimum eligible amount excluded taxes, fees, or gift cards.
- A digital wallet or third-party checkout obscured the transaction.
Protect your bank account
Never give a comparison website your bank username, password, one-time code, or full card number merely to collect offers. CreditCardCompanion plans to show public or user-reported offer information as a discovery aid. You should always verify and activate targeted offers directly with your issuer.
Track value realistically
An offer saves money only when it applies to a purchase you already intended to make. Compare the final price, return policy, and opportunity cost before changing merchants for a promotion.
Offers are targeted and can change. Confirm availability and terms in your own issuer account.
