A large welcome offer can be useful, but the headline number is only the beginning. A sound decision starts with the spending requirement, the deadline, the annual fee, and the purchases that may not count.
Start with the requirement and deadline
Divide the remaining eligible spending by the number of weeks or months available. Compare that pace with spending you already planned. A bonus is not valuable if it encourages purchases you cannot pay in full.
Identify eligibility language
Look for restrictions involving previous card ownership, past bonuses, product families, or targeted eligibility. Never assume approval or bonus eligibility from a marketing headline.
Check exclusions and timing
- Annual fees, balance transfers, cash advances, and person-to-person payments may not count.
- Returned purchases can reduce qualifying spend.
- Pending purchases near the deadline may post too late.
- Authorized-user spending may be treated differently by an issuer.
Estimate real value
Use a conservative redemption value, subtract the annual fee, and count only credits you expect to use naturally. The Welcome Bonus Tracker can calculate a manual pace without importing transactions.
