How to Compare a Credit Card Offer With Its Historical Best

A historical-high welcome offer can provide useful context, but it does not decide whether a card is right for you. Offers may differ in spending requirement, annual fee, statement credits, eligibility language and redemption flexibility.

Compare like with like

Record the offer date, bonus currency, required spending, deadline, annual fee and any temporary credits. A larger bonus with a much larger spending requirement may produce less practical value.

Use a conservative value

Value points according to a redemption you can reasonably complete. Subtract the annual fee and any extra spending the offer would cause. Never carry interest merely to earn a bonus.

Check eligibility before timing

Historical information does not establish current eligibility. Read the application page for prior-card, prior-bonus, product-family and targeted restrictions.

The Welcome Offer & Card Value tool combines the entered offer with reviewed history and separates estimated Year 1 value from ongoing value.
