How to Simplify a Large Credit-Card Portfolio

Use role overlap, annual fees, benefit effort and account history to identify cards requiring review. This guide uses a conservative decision framework rather than assuming the highest advertised rate is automatically best.

Define the decision first

Start with the purchases, trips or benefits you already expect. Keep first-year incentives separate from ongoing value. A welcome offer can improve Year 1 while leaving an expensive card unattractive at renewal.

Calculate recurring value

Estimate rewards from realistic spending and the redemption method you are likely to use. Subtract the return available from a practical alternative card. Count a statement credit only when it replaces normal spending after restrictions, enrollment, timing and extra costs.

Check the restrictions

Review annual and quarterly caps, merchant coding, booking portals, membership requirements, eligible card versions and expiration rules. Missing or unverified information should remain under review rather than be treated as zero.

Consider risk and complexity

Interest, late charges and unnecessary purchases can overwhelm rewards. Also account for the time required to track credits, certificates and enrollment deadlines. CreditCardCompanion does not predict approval and never requires bank credentials or full card numbers.

Use your own assumptions

Open the relevant comparison or calculator, run both conservative and optimistic cases, and verify current terms directly with the issuer before acting.
