The Platinum Card from American Express currently carries an $895 annual fee. Whether it is worth that fee depends on your normal spending and travel—not the maximum advertised value of every benefit.
Start with benefits you would naturally use
Amex currently advertises credits including up to $600 annually for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel, divided into two $300 semiannual periods; up to $400 annually at eligible U.S. Resy restaurants, divided into $100 quarterly periods; and up to $300 annually for eligible digital-entertainment purchases, divided into $25 monthly periods. Enrollment and other terms apply, and The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay.
Those headline amounts are not automatically cash value. Count only spending they replace. A restricted credit that makes you buy something unnecessary may be worth little or nothing.
Include the narrower credits carefully
The current benefits overview also lists up to $200 in annual airline incidental-fee credits after selecting one qualifying airline, up to $219 annually for CLEAR+, a monthly Walmart+ membership credit, up to $300 annually in eligible U.S. lululemon purchases divided quarterly, $200 in Uber Cash delivered monthly with a December bonus, and up to $120 annually toward an auto-renewing Uber One membership. Each has its own eligibility, enrollment, payment, merchant, and timing rules.
Keep rewards and benefits separate
Estimate rewards from realistic annual spending, then compare them with a no-fee or lower-fee alternative. Treat lounge access and hotel-program privileges as optional personal value rather than cash unless they replace purchases you would really make.
Review renewal value—not just Year 1
A welcome offer can make the first year attractive without making later years worthwhile. Repeat the calculation before each renewal because terms and your habits can change.

Common questions
Is the Amex Platinum automatically worth $895 because its benefits exceed the fee?
No. Count only benefits that replace spending you would otherwise make and compare the result with a realistic alternative card.
Should the welcome offer determine renewal value?
No. Evaluate the first year separately from recurring value in later years.
